In rough order of frequency, the problems we find are: a consumer-grade router being used in a business environment, too few access points for the office size, channel congestion from neighboring businesses (a very real problem in Miami’s dense commercial areas), guest devices on the same network as business devices, and outdated access point firmware that’s never been updated.

The fix for most of these is not a faster internet plan — it’s better network hardware and configuration.

Consumer vs. business-grade access points: the real difference

The Wi-Fi router you buy at Best Buy for your home is designed for one family in one house, with maybe a dozen devices, over an area of a few thousand square feet. Your office has more devices, more users, more interference sources, and different coverage requirements — and it runs during business hours when reliability actually costs you money if it fails.

Business-grade access points (from manufacturers like Grandstream, Ubiquiti, Cisco Meraki, or Aruba) are designed for higher device density, have more powerful antennas, support enterprise features like VLAN segmentation and centralized management, and handle roaming between APs without dropping connections. The cost difference is real but modest — a quality business AP runs $200–$500 versus $80–$150 for a consumer unit — and the performance and reliability difference in a commercial environment is significant.

Why channel interference is a Miami-specific problem

Miami-Dade has an unusually high density of businesses per square mile, particularly in areas like Brickell, Doral, Coral Gables, and Wynwood. In a multi-tenant office building, your Wi-Fi is competing with the wireless networks of every other business on your floor — and the floors above and below. Reconfiguration is often enough when: your hardware is less than five years old, you have adequate AP coverage for your space (roughly one AP per 2,000–3,000 square feet in a typical office), and the problem is channel congestion or network segmentation. A few hours of IT work can resolve these issues without any hardware purchase.

Upgrading is worth it when: you’re using consumer equipment in a business environment, your APs don’t support the Wi-Fi standard your devices need (Wi-Fi 6 for newer hardware), or your coverage has physical gaps that no amount of reconfiguration can solve. Hardware replacement combined with proper placement and configuration typically yields dramatically better results than simply adding more consumer routers.
